Beauty How-To: Gorgeous Fishtail Braids & Smoky Eyes Backstage at Christian Siriano

The crisscrossed fishtails at Christian Siriano's fall 2013 show were so gorgeous even the models were swooning over them — and, need we remind, they've had many an updo before. "Christian wanted to do Heidi braids, and I wouldn't let him have it," said Antoinette Beenders, Aveda's global style director. "I said, 'We can do better than that!'"

Well, mission accomplished! Take a close-up look at the finished masterpiece:

To create the style, Beenders first spritzed damp hair with Aveda's Pure Abundance Style Prep, a thickening spray that gives hair more texture and grip. "The last thing you want with braids is floppy hair," she said.

Next she created a center part, smoothed down the flyaways in the front, and began fishtail braiding down the crown and into a singular braid. (To adapt the look at home, she recommends parting your hair into pigtails and fishtail braiding from just the base down.)

Once secured with an elastic, she massaged the fishtail to loosen it up a little and give the models' locks a fuller, thicker look. Then last but not least, she crisscrossed the braids, secured with bobby pins, and boom. Dunzo! Surprisingly simple, right?

As for beauty, MAC makeup artist Polly Osmond played up the opulence of Siriano's fall collection — which was inspired by the Russian opera — with strong, smoldering smoky eyes.
If you look closely, you'll see Osmond feathered out the smoky effect by drawing itty-bitty lines on the outer corners of the eyes:

As for the rest of the look, she kept it simple. "We used MAC taupe to contour the cheeks, no blush, so they have that very cold, strong Russian feel about them," Osmund said. The lips were finished off with MAC's "Mauvey Nude," a natural lip-toned hue and clear Lipglass.
